CAHF is the go-to fundraiser for affordable housing in Calgary. CAHF connects donors and funding agencies with housing providers. This connection and support allow housing providers to leverage available government funding, resulting in accelerated builds and more below-market affordable housing units for Calgarians. CAHF is grateful to all donors and supporters. A special group of donors are being recognized as Founding Donors, and are thanked for their early support in CAHF’s launch. If you are interested in becoming a founding donor, please email ceo@thecahf.com or visit our website.

The affordable housing eco-system uses different language to speak about housing options. CAHF is focused on projects for below market affordable housing. The term below market, or non-market affordable housing refers to housing that is more affordable than market rental housing. The homes are typically rental units, and are developed to provide Calgarians with housing options. Below market housing is typically housing that is purpose-built rental housing with permanently-secured maximum rents set at a discount to the city-wide average.

The City of Calgary defines a household in need of affordable housing if it earns less than 65 per cent of Calgary’s median income and spends 30 per cent or more of its before tax income on shelter costs. According to 2021 census data, median income was $98,000, 65 per cent of median income is $63,700.

There are two types of affordable housing offered by The City of Calgary:

  • Near market or (or low end of market) housing which includes rentals offered at rates approximately 10% below market rates.

  • Subsidized housing which includes several different program types including rent supplements for private landlord units.
